Raghuram Rajan is a renowned Indian economist and a former governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He was born on February 3, 1963, in Bhopal, India. Rajan’s journey to become one of the most respected economists in the world started with his academic achievements. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and went on to receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.


After completing his education, Rajan began his career as a consultant with McKinsey & Company. He later moved to academia, joining the Indian School of Business as a professor of finance. During his tenure, he became known for his research on corporate finance and banking, earning him recognition as a leading scholar in the field.


In 2003, Rajan was appointed as the Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund, where he gained widespread recognition for warning of the global financial crisis that would occur in 2008. His prediction was made in a 2005 speech at the annual meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he warned of the potential dangers of the financial system’s dependence on complex financial instruments.


In 2013, Rajan was appointed as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India, a position he held for three years. During his tenure, he implemented several important reforms to stabilize the Indian economy, including reducing inflation, improving the financial sector, and enhancing the banking sector’s stability. Rajan’s efforts earned him widespread recognition, with many considering him a hero of the Indian economy.


In 2016, Rajan stepped down from his role as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India to return to academia. He is currently a professor of finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research.


Throughout his career, Rajan has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field of economics. He was awarded the prestigious Infosys Prize for Economics in 2010, and was named among the 100 most powerful people in the world by Forbes in 2016.
